What a long day. My weekend scavenging plans were thrown for a loop when I drove out to ABC used auto parts out Pearl City way on Saturday, to see a dumpster truck and HFD ladder truck in the road. Looks like the dumpster had snagged the lowest cables on the overhead powerlines and pulled it down. I think those are typically telephone and cable TV, no tazer sparks flying, but they weren’t taking chances. I wasn’t going to be hitting that SR5 AE86 I had spotted earlier in the week when I spun by on a lark. So now what ended up happening is I woke up early on Sunday, headed out to Aloha Stadium, and signed in for the SCCA Solo II autocross. Once that was taken care of, I then headed of to ABC.

I was a man on a mission and headed directly to the Corolla. It must have been a pretty fresh arrival because it was out front. Quite a bit of it was already scavenged, and the couple days between when I first saw it, more was gone, like the windscreen. Dang, that makes things a little more funky because its open to elements and the weather is rainy. Dang, I’m thinking I should invest in one of those compact cordless impact drivers. Although all the fastners came out easy, it still took me an intense 1 1/2 hours of wrenching to net me the heater core, controls, driver window regulator, interior trim bits. I know I missed some bits, but I was running out of time, and hungry. But it was pretty productive, I maybe could have haggled on price, but I figured getting out of there forking over $100 and a 10mm socket that rolled under car was good for all the bits.

And then I went back to Aloha Stadium to go race! Which was quite amusing as the weather was quite rainy there.

I’m pretty pooped now, I think I’ll go have me another beer. And sorry no pics, too busy!

Just got back into Sapporo from three days of boarding in Niseko following three days of bus-tripping out to Sapporo Kokusai. Pretty much every day was going off at Kokusai, with between 4 and 8cm of new stuff to ride every day. On the first day there was a pretty hard melt crust under the fresh, but this made it easier to hike back in-bounds (don’t ask). Each aditional day’s snow added to the soft layer. On Friday when I headed out to Niseko, the snow was crazy dumping in Sapporo, probably around 6 to 8cm of new snow in town. The sound of the front-end loader scraping the street in the dark of the morning gave it away. The further out from town the bus went, the less and less significant the signs of recent snowfall became. After seeing a reasonably good layer of wind-redistributed snow at Nakayama-touge, I figured it had snowed out that way, but the wind had just moved it around. Arriving at Niseko, I discovered that it had in fact snowed there too, but the bluebird weather made the new snow adhesively sticky down at the lower elevations. Root will remember the glue-like grip of the snow down at the Hanazono base.

The skies darkened and the wind picked up and new snow began to fall. I had expected a normal Niseko ice-krunk weekend, but the developing storm on Friday afternoon laid down a good layer for Saturday. The bottom was still krunky on Saturday, but the upper areas were soft, and the base layers were not icy, since the temperature had stayed below freezing. It was bitingly windy though. Sunday morning brought the beautiful sounds of front-end loaders clearing the streets and parking lots, so up the mountain for the last day I went, finding the typical “fake powder” riding at the lower levels with 10cm of fresh concealing a mogully death ice base. The topside however was very nice, with three days of accumulated new snow. It was still typically windy though, and although the user level was surprisingly low, everything got ridden out pretty quickly.

Getting on the bus at 14:00, the sky was clear blue, and the weather warm. The conditions progressively deteriorated returning to Sapporo, with a light flurry at Nakayama-touge, and a full-blown blizzard in town. Just from the time I left my lodging to go to Tokyu Hands, get some soup curry for dinner and return, 8cm fell outside the doorstep. If I was more hardcore, or didn’t have other priorities, I’d catch the 07:30 bus to Kokusai and ride until 15:00 and get on the direct bus to the airport and catch my domestic connector at 18:00. I know Kokusai will be freaking off the hook tomorrow. Maybe next time – I have some manga shopping to do tomorrow.

More beer? This time another Hitachino variety I haven’t had yet, the XH. Labeled as matured in sake casks. Pours cloudy dark brown with extremely strong head. Sorry, I passed out before I could write a review so my thoughts are a bit cloudy on it. I blame the high 8%ABV. I didn’t really detect the cask flavors. I recall the sweet then sourness. It reminded me again of drunk juice malt liquors that I do not like. I can’t say I’m having a very good track record with the Hitachino’s, 2.5 out of 4 booze sleeping monkeys.

Turn the radio on and the siren is for real. A tsunami warning has been issued projected to arrive around 1100 Hawaii Time. No estimates on size issued, just that there is something significant expected, unlike the past little events that were almost unnoticeable. Our house is not in the innundation zones so we wont need to evacuate. We shall see what happens.

There is no better way to antangonize anything than to threaten it’s food, and us humans are no exception. So it was this Saturday evening at Windward Mall IHOP. I had heard rumours of bad service, but I had no idea until experiencing it first hand. This night after a Cruise night found us in need of some food, the IHOP was conveniently located, and pancakes sounded good. We thought there might be a wait, but stepping inside that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t that crowded inside. What we didn’t realize that this also seemed to apply to the staff, there aparently wasn’t enough staff. Or so we would like to hope. It took an hour, at least, from when seated to getting our food. Tell me it takes that long to make a bunch of pancakes, steak & eggs, omlette, and sausage. I actually didn’t have much to complain about the food, it was tasty, the steak was tender, eggs cooked properly, but it took ridiculously long. Five minutes longer and we would halve walked.

Hana hou? I sure as heck hope not! And I am sure not going to give them another chance! 1 out of 4 raving mad hungry monkeys (Moe “I want some cake” anyone?) because the food was decent for what you expect from a place like this, but the delay was simply unacceptable.

It’s kind of a mini “Whole Paycheck” market. They borrowed a lot of aspects with the areas of higher end products, deli, and prepared foods, but not quite as extensive. The beer selection is also pretty good with some items I haven’t seen elsewhere, but again is nowhere as extensive as Whole Foods. What I did spy was this Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale. With a name like that I simply could not resist. Pours with a pretty strong head, simply popping the cap produced bubbles in the bottle neck. Color is a medium dark somewhat cloudy amber. Immediate floral aroma without even taking a sip. It is strongly hoppy, the bitter hits you from the begining, it’s no aftertaste here! I guess Bigfoot like drinking flowers? It demands to be drunk while eating something hearty and strongly flavored, I had it with a herbed roasted chicken and it worked well. I don’t know if I could handle drinking this by itself. Thankfully it doesn’t have the syrupy sweet that immediately turns me off, although I have to wonder how they achieved the butt kicking 9.6%ABV, and the label does say barleywine style. I only now coming off the buzz from that one bottle. I have a hard time rating this. I enjoyed it with my meal, perhaps the ABV helped, but I had a hard time finishing it after my food was done. I guess go with middle of the road 2 out of 4 bigmonkeys?

Late this afternoon met up with Kevyn and Scat and shuttled up to the park. We were figuring on two runs, so cut to the right outside of mainline and took the nice little tight track. It was quite dry and conditions were getting a little sketchy, my back tire was getting quite skittish, but it was fun! We pop out in the middle of the jump zone, just before “Lawsuit”. Scat says something and then comes to a stop. I catch something white in my eye, then see it’s someone on the ground as I cruise by. I come to a stop as I hear the words “broken collar bone”. Uh oh. I see middle ageish caucasian dude is on the ground. I didn’t even realize that I had ridden between where his bike had stopped and where he landed. It’s a dually, he’s not set up for hardcore DH, he is with his young son. He’s quite coherent, knows what’s going on, and is quite calm. Which is good, for everyone, and I think really helps his young son, being all of seven years old.

Just minutes before us, he had taken the second jump and landed badly, OTB, and into the dirt with his shoulder. He was now collected enough that we helped him up, and figured he could walk it. Thankfully it was mainline so the hike out was not too bad and easy to push two bikes. We made it out to the parking lot, and considering everything, Joe collarbone (yes, his name really was Joe) was in pretty good spirits. He was able to joke around. We helped load up his and kids bikes and made sure he was ok. He had already called his wife, who conveniently, or maybe not, heads the ER at St. Francis. He called for an ambulance since he wasn’t sure if he could drive. It looked like things were under control, so we gave him our best wishes and headed back for the trails.

We’d eaten some time, and things like this tend to make you a bit gun shy, so we decided to make it one run. We dropped into dumps, which again I was finding pretty sketchy. My semi-knobby rear was all over the place. Just as we came to the pause at the drop into the wood bridges of lower Dumps, we heard the ambulance, so we knew Joe was going to be taken care of. It was down to Dumps we dropped. I was scrubbing a lot of speed, being pretty cautious. I caught sight of someone who said something to someone out of sight which diverted my attention so I detoured around the rock jumps near the end of Dumps. We climbed back up to Mainline. The sun was blazing but getting low in the sky so was finding riding into the making for some challenging visibility. Turning off into the cover of Tacos was better. Continued through the twists down Ant Hill. Then headed down to the exit of Agave and took the Tank exit. From there it was onto the short section paralleling the concrete road, which was as sketchy as always. A brief rest at the concrete road, and then we finished the trail out. It was a decent ride, but the earlier events had kind of muted the feel of the ride. Thankfully all was good, and the kid was going to have a story to tell all his buddies at school tomorrow!
