Mmm… Mexican

Well, “like” Mexican.  As I experienced many years ago at Sombrero in the basement dining arcade in the Paseo building adjacent to the JR Sapporo station, it looks right, but doesn’t taste right.  The fried chicken and fries weren’t really “Mexican”, but the chili con carne and enchilada were… somewhat.  They did a lot better than last time.  To this day I don’t know what that white stuff that came with my burrito was, but it wasn’t sour cream (I think it was cream cheese).

The chili was actually spicy with burn and a good cumin flavor, but there were snausages in it.  Okay, not authentic, but still tasty.  The enchilada had either pork or chicken in it.  I really couldn’t tell.  I think it was probably pork.  Maybe.  The sauce was similar to the enchirito sauce at Taco Hell, but more flavorful and less runny.  The weird part was the tortilla.  It seemed almost gummy, almost like a crepe texture.  The chicken was juicy thigh meat, the fries were hot but a little oily, the salad was there for color and not flavor, and the rice was a sticky Japanese rice and not loose Mexican rice.  It was a good meal, just not really Mexican.  OK, how’s this – it was better than Jose’s in Kaimuki.  Sorry, that’s not saying much.  It was a good Japanese meal styled to look like Mexican food.  There.  Sorted.

Huh?  What?  OK, I liked it.  Give them a try if you’re in town.
