Angry Food

sammich of angerThe last time Fabio joined the manga/anime geeks from Collector Maniacs for a late dinner at Big City Diner in Kaimuki, he got a burger that was either poorly engineered, designed, or assembled.  As soon as he tried to pick it up, it fell apart, making him explode with anger just like Steve Wilkos!

Fabio was busy waxing snowboards last Thursday in anticipation of the upcoming Whistler trip, and Roy and Mike already had food, so Root and I went by BCD for dinner.  I got their Cheesesteak sandwich ($10 USD) and a Sam Adams Winter Lager ($5 USD).  The sandwich was big and buried in toppings.  This would surely make Fabio pop a vein in his forehead!  I ate the lettuce and tomato slices first so they wouldn’t interfere with the structural integrity of the sandwich, but this is a cheesesteak – it will fall apart!  The server neglected to give me a knife, so I had to cut the plate-long, micro-baguette with my fork.  I picked it up to start eating, and lo and behold, it fell apart.  Go figure.

The meat, onions, cheese, and mushrooms all blended together to make for a great taste, while maintaining their own individuality throughout.  The meat was maybe a little on the chewy/overcooked side, but that is probably due to some draconian post-BSE Health Department rule – the  same one that prevents you from getting a medium-rare hamburger.  They advertised the cheesesteak as coming with some signature garlic mayonnaise, and the garlic flavor was indeed evident, however; it was a stanky, stale flavor that took away from the main components – not unlike the nasty, emetic “seasoned mayonnaise as used in our macaroni salad” that Zippy’s insists on slathering over the rice on their Chili-Moco.  I was pleased and would order this again in the future.

The Sam’s Winter Lager tasted and looked essentially like a red ale.

There was no room for dessert.
