Summer Sucks

Hot.

It’s too hot.

WiltedAs usual, It’s so much better to be out riding in the heat than being at home in the heat. Chris manages to free up some time to join us for a ride. His rusty legs and butt feel the strain of the climbs and the repeated beating of the saddle, but as he says, “there are good bike rides and better bike rides.” Chris gets stuck in traffic at Makapu’u because of some HFD rescue, so shows up a little tardy. Danny and Sara get a head start and climb the road for parts unknown. When Chris shows up, we climb to the Mango tree where we expect them to be, but they aren’t there. We assume they started into the side loop without us, so proceed into the trail thinking we will run into them at some point. We complete the loop and come out onto the road and see them coming down Government Road. Apparently, a miscommunication led them to the end of the road.

Sara has taken a dose of vitamin Rip and vitamin Hammer, and Chris and I have a hard time keeping up as she lights the dirt on fire on the Ditch Trail. At the rest stop at the inner loop trailhead, my face stings with sweat. On we go. My Maui conditioning has given me a jolt of Go-power. Again Danny and Sara have taken a head start, but I catch up to Danny at the upper trail junction. I yell at him to turn, but he disappears around the turn. We later regroup and climb the cardiac hill to the big tree. Chris gets to try out the shoulder knocker trail. Dropping the fat guy singletrack, we return to the Ditch.

Pain and suffering!

We must have more!

Up the inner loop we go, taking few breaks on the lung bursting technical climbs. The ground conditions are beautiful and the traction great. A brief rest to choke the lungs back down into the ribcage, and down the descent we go. A fast blast out the Ditch and down Government Road and we’re back at the start.

D = 11.7 km (7.26-miles), Vavr = 12.6 km/h (7.8 mph), Vmax = 31.5 km/h (19.6 mph), T = 56-minutes (total ride time approximately 1-1/2 hours)
