Swine Flew

I was powered by a pork adobo plate lunch up Tantalus on Thursday. I was working solo, so I had to turn in an hour of overtime in order to get everything done. I told Ckucke I would be late and that they should roll out without me and I would meet up with them at the top, but after I got changed and drove over, I was only about fifteen minutes late, so they waited for me (thanks, guys!). After working late, I really needed this ride to blow off some steam. The start was nice and slow and the weather impeccable. Ckucke took the lead right away. By the end of the houses, he already had a good lead on us. By the top of Euco, Root and Kevyn had pulled ahead of me, and Ckucke was out of sight! I had run out of Amino Vital after last weekend, so I was only running on Cytomax. The Cytomax kept the burn down, but I did notice a definite deficit in my fast-twitch muscle fibers. Every time I stood to sprint a steeper section, I dropped further behind instead of catching up: I had to be satisfied with sitting and grunting through the climbs. I felt really “draggy”. I did manage to reel the pack in by the very top and turned in a 39-minute ascent.

On the way down, we were immediately faced with and oncoming white Saab coming up the hill around a blind corner in the downhill lane! I cut her no quarter, and she almost went into the outside wall when she overcorrected to get out of the wrong lane. The descent was otherwise leisurely, and we were bathed in the warm orange of a postcard sunset as we stitced the turns to the bottom. It was a very quiet afternoon on the mountain: We were among maybe a dozen riders and a handful of pedestrians and dogs out on the road.  The beginner’s traithlon passed last weekend, so maybe that’s why the crowds were not out in force today.  Post ride dinner was a pork trio of Tacos al Pastor, Carnitas burrito, and Pozole Rojo soup at Los Chapparos. Who’s afraid of the Mexican Swine flu!

D = 15.38 km (9.56-miles), Vavr = 18.0 km/h (11.2-mph), Vmax = 65.0 km/h (40.4-mph), T = 51-minutes (39-minutes up, 12-minutes down)
