Please Do Not Panic

That was kinda amusing, just got a call on our home phone from Habib claiming that my computer was full of “junk and viruses” and that he’d help me. I was tempted to play along and see what he wanted me to do, but I didn’t feel like spending any more time once we got to the point that he asked if I could go on my PC.

  • I’ll finish the story for you.

So Habib will tell you to open a command window, and you’ll naively ask how do you do that, and he’ll tell you how. Then he’ll tell you to type thus and such command (I forget what it was) and it will return what he calls a unique ID; but in reality its the same on all windows machines of similar version. He’ll uses that to “verify” that your computer is “infected”. Then because he knows your “unique ID” he can magically fix it by taking your credit card number; charging you only $99.95 or some other arbitrary price.
