Maui Das Y

Monday, June 9, found me on a Hawaiian jet for Kahului, Maui with my boss. A later flight, less crowds at the airport, everything went uneventfully. Pick up our equipment and jam it all into a Chevy Impala, which much smaller than the land boat you used to think of, still has a pretty big trunk. Drive out to Lahaina is also uneventful. Weather is postcard blue skies. I end up dozing having the luxury of being a passenger. We’re installing system at new Genki Sushi in Lahaina, in new mall accross the street from the cannery mall. The install goes pretty smoothly, although no benefit of air conditioning this time around makes for sweltering hot house.

Break for late lunch, boss asks what I feel like eating. I don’t really know what’s around, he mentions Mexican. Mexican is good, we end up at Maui Tacos, which is debatably “Mexican”. I wonder if this is the original Maui Tacos, seeing that we are in Maui. Anyway, on a side board I notice they have tacos el pastor so decide to try theirs. I get two as a combo plate. Ends up being a pretty decent pile of food. Flavor is decent, perhaps not as flavorful as might want, but its not bad. The pork is little cubes nicely browned, not drowning in oil or shredded like kalua. The beans and rice are unspectacular and I don’t eat all of it. I don’t touch the greasy looking chips, they look as greasy as the ones I’ve had at the oahu location. The condiment bar is a nice feature of Maui Tacos, soda refills are free. The counter service guy was pretty pleasant and efficient. So as long as you’re going for So-cal Mex, this was a decent value, I’d give it right in the middle of 2.5 smiling monkeys, with no bulging forehead veins on the angerometer. Faeries, Ghosts, and Geisha Girls

I pushed the mountain today, and the mountain pushed back. On the loose descent from the concrete block hill, I met the Earth on a deep, personal basis.

StartI met Root, JT, and Ckucke out at Ditch for an afternoon spin. The air was still and the skies overcast. The humidity was almost unbearable. We duplicated the now normal Government Road, side loop, Ditch, upper trail, cardiac climb, concrete block, shoulder knocker, big tree, fat guy, inner loop, and out circuit that has been the standard for the past several rides. This week felt good. The heat was oppressive, but I didn’t feel worked like last week. Must be an “every other” ride thing – I felt fine two rides ago. Skinny

Friday afternoon was sunny, so I went out for a spin on the Bridgestone. Getting out on a lightweight fully rigid bike felt good for a change. All pedal input immediately manifested as a surge of forward momentum, and, for better or worse, all the subtle and not so subtle nuances of the riding surface were transmitted directly up through the pedals, seat, and bars. The drop position for some reason made me automatically ride fast. “Mellow” had no place when the hands gripped the curves of the drops and the body was forced forward into a racing position. The skinny high-pressure tires spun up to speed immediately and I was quickly out of gears. The bike was put together with leftover parts – It really deserved something bigger than the 42t outer chainring and a cassette with an 11t in it. The climbs felt the most natural standing while gripping the handlebar ends. The heat quickly made me deplete my one bottle, so I did one last lap and headed home through the park. The perimeter running trail that was so smooth on the Ellsworth was a jarring tooth-rattler on the MB-1. Shaking around with my neck craned all the way out probably did no good for the sore neck that has been bothering me for a while.

Auto Crp

Alright, auto arm & lock really pissing me off. Went to fill gas, leave key in ignition with radio on, alarm auto arms and locks doors. Would have been royal pia if I hadn’t left window open.

Smart? Machines

I hate machines that are set to be smarter than you, but end up being annoying. Alarm that I reconnected in car auto locks on ignition, auto unlocks on ignition off, and most annoyingly auto arms. When I turn it off, I want it to stay off, not turn back on while I’m working under the hood!

It’s just as well nobody rode on Kam Day – it rained heavily about 16:00. Got to make all kinds of new pictures for the top of the blog though…

Yay! I have Kamehameha Day off tomorrow!
Boo! Nobody can go riding with me!

Natsu no Tomodachi

Unconcerned by puddles, let’s ride our bikes
Summer’s hurrying by right below this rainbow…

As I reversed out of the driveway, the stereo finished indexing the USB drive and resumed playing CoCo’s “Natsu on Tomodachi”. I didn’t really pay attention to the lyrics before, but they caught my ear this time around. The weather report on Thursday was ominous with heavy showers predicted for the weekend, but they never fully materialized. There was a brief heavy downpour on Friday night, but Saturday morning was sunny and clear. If it did rain out at the trail, maybe there would be a few damp spots here and there, but I was unconcerned. Continue reading ‘Natsu no Tomodachi’

“returns must be accompanied by a receipt…”

Fatherhood has changed me in some profound ways; ‘cute’ is now part of my vocabulary and I use it on a regular basis. I talk to people with babies. And like it. Other people come up to me and talk to me about “The Kid” and their kids and what not. On Sunday at Costco I had an oba-san walk alongside of me, coo’ing at “The Kid” to get him back to sleep as I tried to hide from the horde. I have developed more empathy for kids and parents and hot moms.

Am I lost? Was what made ‘me’ me gone? So you have to imagine my glee when I felt the return of the hate the other night at the shop. Know that feeling when you first step barefoot into mud? The hate is sorta like that wet, squishy sensation that makes a lot of sucking noises that you grow to like once you realize it’s warm and it’ll get all over everything and it’ll hide you from the Predator monster till you can gather your strength to go mano y mano with it. Yardhouse

So this past sunday after attending and shooting the 29th annual Pan Pacific Festival Parade, Taro and I decided to leverage our choice street parking (ie: free) and check out the newly constructed Beachwalk Venue for food.
